Valedictory Ceremony of Specialized Training Program in Cancer Care for BIMSTEC Countries
The valedictory ceremony of the Specialized Training Program in Cancer Care for BIMSTEC Countries was successfully held at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCHRC), Visakhapatnam. The four-week onsite training program was conducted from 5- 31, January 2026, marking the successful completion of the second phase of this international capacity-building initiative.

This prestigious initiative was launched following the announcement made by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India during the 6th BIMSTEC Summit. The program is being implemented by Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) with support from the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The inaugural edition of the program was conducted during July–August 2025, benefiting 21 cancer-care professionals from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Nepal.
The second phase of the program was formally inaugurated on 5th January 2026 at HBCHRC Visakhapatnam by Shri. C. S. R. Ram, Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC & SAARC), Ministry of External Affairs. Addressing the gathering during the valedictory session, Shri C. S. R. Ram highlighted that the training program brought together participants from five BIMSTEC countries, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. He emphasized that disparities in access to quality cancer services across the region necessitate collective capacity-building efforts. He expressed confidence that the program would not only enhance cancer-care capabilities but also help establish a strong network for future collaboration and research among BIMSTEC nations.
The Director of HBCHRC Visakhapatnam, Dr. Umesh Mahantshetty encouraged participants to implement the learnings in their respective countries and reiterated HBCHRC Visakhapatnam’s continued support for mutual collaboration and knowledge sharing. He affirmed that the institution’s doors remain open for future academic and clinical cooperation.
He also stated that the program marked a significant milestone in strengthening oncology capacity across the BIMSTEC region. Through this collaborative effort, Tata Memorial Centre and the Ministry of External Affairs reaffirmed India’s commitment to regional cooperation and the promotion of equitable, high-quality cancer care.
Participants from BIMSTEC countries expressed their gratitude to the academic coordinators and the leadership of HBCHRC Visakhapatnam. They conveyed special thanks to Shri C. S. R. Ram, Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC & SAARC), MoEA and Dr. Umesh Mahantshetty, Director, HBCHRC Visakhapatnam. Participants shared that the training significantly enhanced their knowledge and skills, which they plan to implement in their home countries.
The valedictory ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participants, followed by a group photograph. The event was attended by faculty members and staff of HBCHRC Visakhapatnam marking the successful completion of the program.
