55th Lab Raising Day Celebrations (LRDC) at NSTL



Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) celebrated its 55th Lab Raising Day on 20 Aug 2024. Established on 20 Aug 1969 with 10 staff members, NSTL has grown multifold with 603 personnel including 186 Scientists and has made significant contributions to defence R&D and is recognized as one of the premiere labs of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) engaged in the development of underwater weapons and systems. NSTL is committed to strengthen Indian defence sector by developing and delivering cutting-edge and futuristic technologies.
Chief Guest on the occasion is Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, AVSM, VSM, FOC-IN-C ENC; Distinguished Guest is Dr. Y. Sreenivas Rao, Distinguished Scientist & Director General Naval Systems & Materials (NS&M) and the Guest of Honour is Dr. (Smt.) N Ranjana, Outstanding Scientist & Director Futuristic Technology Management (DFTM), DRDO.
Firstly, dignitaries paid floral tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and then started the programme by lighting the lamp in Mohapatra Manasi Auditorium.
In her welcome address, Ms. G Palakshi, Scientist ‘G’ & Chairperson LRDC-2024 gave a brief of all the events organized as part of LRDC-2024 and Dr. HN Das, Scientist ‘G’ & Chairman Works Committee gave Annual Report of several activities undertaken by Works Committee on various occasions. In particular he mentioned about the social service activities which were carried out with the cooperation of the Members of NSTL Civil Employees Union, JCM-IV, Works Committee and NSTL fraternity. Sri JN Varma, Secretary NSTL Civil Employees Union explained in detail about the social service activities rendered by NSTL during the previous year.
In her address, Dr. N Ranjana explained in detail how DRDO is taking steps towards realizing Atma Nirbhar Bharat and Vikasit Bharat 2047 by tri-partite efforts of DRDO, Academia and Industry. She said that Professors of various IITs are being continuously kept in touch with lot of insights into the technologies. She stressed on the innovative technologies to meet futuristic requirements as per the DRDO Roadmaps for the development of Systems as well as Technologies.

On this occasion, staff who completed 25 years of service were felicitated. Best Library User Appreciations were also distributed.
On this occasion, Captain (Dr.) AVSN Murty was presented prestigious Letter of Appreciation by Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee(CISC), for his commendable work on naval infrared stealth.
On 05 June 2023, Combat Trials of Varunastra Torpedo was successfully conducted by deploying Underwater Target Structure(UWTS), which was successfully designed and developed by NSTL along with Industry Partner M/s. Trini Tech Infrastructure India Pvt. Ltd., Visakhapatnam. This technology is being transferred to industry partner through a licensing agreement on this auspicious occasion. Dr. Y Sreenivas Rao, Dr. Abraham Varughese, Dr. N Ranjana handed over LATOT (Licensing Agreement of Transfer of Technology) to industry partner Sri VNV Satyendra, Managing Director.
In his address, Dr. Abraham Varughese, Outstanding Scientist & Director NSTL said that NSTL is putting its best efforts as per the requirements of Indian Navy, with the existing world-class test facilities. He briefed the genesis of NSTL and evolution to the present stage of being state-of-the-art premier naval research laboratory in the country.
Distinguished Scientist Dr. Y Sreenivas Rao reminded NSTL the responsibilities towards fulfilling requirements of Indian Navy with quality. He wished NSTL to mentor industries to produce world-class products as per the existing global scenario. He listed various technologies that need to be updated. He told that NSTL is blessed with talented and hardworking personnel. He wished that with the enrichment of NSTL, Visakhapatnam can become the industry hub for the production of underwater weapons.
In his speech, Chief Guest Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar congratulated the Team NSTL on completing 55 years of journey towards empowering nation. He said that not only Indian Navy but also entire nation is having lot of hopes on NSTL. He said that the responsibility of NSTL has increased by having its products in the list of positive indigenous list. He said that NSTL is closely coordinating Indian Navy for timely completion of projects and Indian Navy is eagerly waiting for the forthcoming projects. He said that NSTL has become a reliable partner of Indian Navy with hardwork, dedication and tireless efforts.
The celebrations concluded with felicitation to Chief Guest V.Adm. Rajesh Pendharkar by Dr. Y Sreenivas Rao and Dr. Abraham Varughese.
